Electrician Found Dead Inside Elevator Shaft of Hell's Kitchen High-Rise

HELL'S KITCHEN — An electrician was found dead inside the elevator shaft of a luxury 10th Avenue high-rise where he became wedged the night before, the NYPD said.

Steven Simpson, 53, got stuck between the shaft and an elevator car between the fifth and sixth floors of 555 10th Ave., at the corner of West 41st Street, at some point Saturday evening, police said.

Officers found the Brooklyn resident after responding to a call reporting an unconscious person at the location Sunday morning, the NYPD said.

Simpson was pronounced dead at the scene and an investigation is ongoing, police said. The Medical Examiner will determine his cause of death.

It wasn't immediately clear how he ended up in the elevator shaft.

The Extell Development-owned luxury building is currently leasing out apartments and will soon house a new Success Academy charter school.

A spokeswoman for Extell on Monday said the incident happened in the space operated by Success Academy.

Marc Heiman, the CEO and president of the school's contractor Richter + Ratner, said the site was "securely shut down, completely evacuated per standard protocol" prior to the incident, but couldn't provide additional information.

The city's Department of Buildings inspected the site on Sunday and issued a cease-use order on the elevator involved in Simpson's death, a spokesman said on Monday.

Its investigation is ongoing.
