WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — The Dominican Film Festival is back in its sixth year of celebrating filmmakers and works that reflect the history, culture, and relationship between the Dominican Republic and the United States.

The festival, produced by Cine-Art Entertainment, this year will feature 70 movies throughout six different venues in Washington Heights, Harlem, Inwood and Midtown.

The films highlight many subjects relevant to Dominican communities in the Caribbean island, New York City, and Haiti, from street vendors in Manhattan to the significance of hair in the culture and among women.

The festival, in addition to showcasing films, organized several workshops and events for the community, including a family day that's packed with comedies and sci-fi films. Organizers are also hosting a five-day workshop for kids to learn how to use film equipment.

Other workshops and talks include a masterclass on "Film Production with a Caribbean Identity" that shows how filmmakers can approach “the cultural and artistic identity” of the Caribbean when filming.

The festival is also organizing several legal workshops to help artists protect their work and understand distribution rights.

The festival opens Tuesday, July 25 with the award-winning film “Carpinteros/Woodpeckers” and “Life Coach” in the United Palace theater on 4140 Broadway. It runs through Sunday, July 30.
