MIDTOWN — The city will continue sweating it out through Friday as temperatures are expected to top 90 degrees for the next three days — bringing the third heat wave of the season, forecasters said.

The Wednesday high should reach 93 degrees, while Thursday will peak at 96 degrees and Friday will top 91 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

“We’ve got a lot of warm air just filtering in through the west and south,” NWS spokesman Chris Stachelski said. “It’ll stay through the weekend.”

An air-quality alert has also been issued for the city as the lack of a breeze will likely cause muggy oxygen to linger, Stachelski said.

“The air is pretty stagnant,” he said. “There’s not a lot of wind to stir up the air. Pollutants will hang for the next day or two.”

The balmy weather will likely last through the weekend, though temperatures will cool off slightly, forecasters said.

Saturday’s high should reach 88 degrees while Sunday will hit 87 degrees.

The Wednesday high of 93 degrees still falls significantly short of the July 19 city record of 102 degrees reached in 1972. The July 20 city record is 101 degrees set in 1980, according to Accuweather.

The borough could also see occasional thunderstorms through Sunday, forecasters said.

“It’s hot and unstable,” Stachelski said. “They just pop off in the heat and humidity.”
