Taxi Rider Hops Out of Cab and Deflates NYPD Car's Tire, Police Say

HELL’S KITCHEN — A taxi passenger hopped out of his cab and deflated a police car's tire before fleeing the scene, the NYPD said.

A witness told police the passenger exited the cab at the southeast corner of West 42nd Street and 11th Avenue around 8:20 p.m. on July 5 and approached the NYPD vehicle.

The witness then saw the person deflate the vehicle’s front passenger side tire before fleeing westbound on West 42nd Street, toward 12th Avenue, and getting into a gray Nissan, police said.

It was not clear what type or model of police vehicle suffered the damage. 

No one had been arrested in connection with the incident as of Wednesday.

Other recent notable incidents in the 10th Precinct include:

► A 24-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were arrested after police found them inside an unoccupied Gray Line tour bus parked at the southwest corner of West 38th Street and Ninth Avenue around 11:55 p.m. on July 6 without permission to be inside, the NYPD said. Gray Line Tours didn’t respond to a request for comment.

► A woman told police her car was in front of an Elliott-Chelsea Houses building at 428 W. 26th St., between Ninth and 10th avenues, around 5:30 p.m. on July 6 when a flying glass bottle dented her trunk. A witness spotted a teen boy throwing the bottle from an apartment window at the building, but no one had been arrested as of Wednesday.

► Two men were involved in a car accident at the northeast corner of West 28th Street and Eighth Avenue around 7:20 p.m. on July 7 when one of the men got out of his vehicle, grabbed the other by the shirt and punched him in the chest, police said. The victim fell to the ground and cut his right elbow, and the attacker was arrested. 

► A woman bypassed a locked gate at P.S. 33 Chelsea Prep at 281 Ninth Ave., at the corner of West 26th Street, around 2:25 a.m. on July 8 and stole two bags of Canadian cedar mulch, the NYPD said. The woman hadn’t been arrested as of Wednesday, and the school’s parent coordinator on declined to comment on the theft Thursday.

► A woman grabbed a 23-year-old woman by the hair outside of the Highline Ballroom, at 431 W. 16th St., around 2:15 a.m. on July 9 and dragged her to the ground, police said. The victim wasn't injured and refused medical attention at the scene, and her attacker hadn’t been arrested as of Wednesday. The venue didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

► A vandal or vandals broke a window at Sarabeth’s Bakery inside the Chelsea Market, at 75 Ninth Ave., around 4 a.m. on July 9, the NYPD said. The window will cost more than $250 to fix, and no one had been arrested in connection with the incident as of Wednesday. Sarabeth’s didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

► A man of an unknown age locked his bicycle next to the Chelsea Square Restaurant, at the corner of West 23rd Street and Ninth Avenue, around 11 p.m. on July 4 to pick up food, police said. When he returned to the location soon after, the chain had been cut and the bike was gone. No one had been arrested in connection with the theft as of Wednesday.
