19-Year-Old Shot and Killed Outside Stapleton Deli, Police Say

By Katie Honan | July 3, 2017 9:50am

STAPLETON — A 19-year-old man was fatally shot in the head in front of a deli by a gunman who fired from next door, police said.

Tairiq Matthews was standing in front of a deli on the corner of Vanderbilt Avenue and Hamilton Street at around 6:30 p.m. Friday when he was shot in the head, according to police.

The gunman had gone into a nail salon next door with a few other men before stepping outside to fire his pistol toward the corner, police said. He then fled the scene.

It's not clear what motivated the shooting.

Matthews lived on N. Burgher Avenue in West Brighton, police said.
