MIDTOWN — Amtrak has lifted the temporary speed restrictions it placed on trains in preparation for what Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the “summer of hell” at Penn Station.

Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains traveling between Penn Station and New Jersey will be able to travel up to 15 mph as of Monday morning, Amtrak said in a release.

The restrictions, which were placed as the rail service carried out maintenance work and inspections, had slowed many trains to 10 mph, NJ.com reported

“Amtrak engineering forces have made great progress advancing work in Penn Station’s A Interlocking,” the release said.

“We thank passengers for their patience as we work to renew the infrastructure at Penn Station,” it added.

Maintenance work — slated to start next Monday, July 10, and wrap up Sept. 1 — will take several tracks at the station out of service.
