Elderly Man Fatally Struck by Cab While Crossing Cooper Square, NYPD Says

EAST VILLAGE — An 87-year-old man was fatally struck by a taxi while crossing Cooper Square on Sunday night, police said.

The man was crossing east to west near East Fifth Street when he was hit by the yellow cab about 9 p.m., the NYPD said.

He was in the crosswalk but did not have the light, police said.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he died.

The 47-year-old taxi driver remained at the scene and hasn’t been charged, police said Monday morning.

The victim’s identity was behind withheld pending family notification, police said.
