BUSHWICK — A cyclist who was critically injured by a hit-and-run driver early Friday morning has died from his injuries, police said.

Ronald James Burke, 32, of Lexington, South Carolina, was biking east on Linden Street at 3:28 a.m. when he was hit by a 2005 Acura traveling south on Central Avenue, police said.

He died from his injuries later that morning at Kings County Hospital, police said.

Eyewitnesses said the cyclist had been struck while riding in the bike lane on Central Avenue, though a preliminary investigation conducted by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad determined that the driver was headed south on Central Avenue with the green light when Burke rode east across the intersection along Linden Street, police said.

The male driver waited at the scene for an ambulance to arrive but drove off before police arrived, according to the NYPD.

Fleeing the scene of a collision is a crime and the driver is being sought for further questioning as the investigation continues, police said.

Crashes involving cyclists have been on the rise in Bushwick, an uptick that local police have responded to by ticketing cyclists for running red lights and stop signs.
