Woman Stabbed to Death in Bed-Stuy, Police Say

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A Bed-Stuy resident known to her neighbors as a sweet woman who loved her dog was stabbed to death early Monday morning, according to police.

Officers responding to a 911 call just after midnight found LaVerne Spencer, 55, with multiple stab wounds inside her apartment at 482 Gates Ave. between Tompkins and Marcy avenues, police said.

Paramedics rushed Spencer to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, officials said.

Spencer's boyfriend, Anthony Bradford, 53, was taken into custody shortly after at 317 Monroe St., and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, police said Tuesday. No weapon has been recovered, police said.

Marvin Herring, who lives across the street from the woman's building, remembered Spencer as a nice, polite woman who frequently walked a little white dog around the block.

"Everybody knew her as the nice lady with the dog," Herring said. "It's sad to see something end that way, you know?"
