5 Attackers Beat Man With Bat and Try to Run Him Over With Car, NYPD Says

THE BRONX — A man suffered life-threatening injuries when five people beat him with a baseball bat and tried to run him over with a car in Concourse Sunday night, NYPD officials said.

The 32-year-old victim, whose name wasn't immediately released, was attacked near McClellan Street and River Avenue about 7 p.m., police said.

The group beat him repeatedly with a bat, and suspect Julio Mendez Santana, 22, tried to run him over with a car, police said.

The victim was treated at Lincoln Medical Center, where he's listed in critical condition, police said.

Santana was arrested near Yankee Stadium on charges of gang assault, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Investigators were still looking for the other four attackers, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the attack, police said.

Santana was arrested in April for criminal possession of stolen property and driving without a license, and again in June on the same charges, police said.

He was arrested two other times, but police records of those arrests are sealed, officials said.
