QUEENS — Thieves have broken into and stolen airbags from six cars in Forest Hills since mid-May, local police officials said.

All incidents took place at night along the Grand Central Parkway Service Road, between 62nd and 64th avenues, according to Deputy Inspector Robert Ramos, commanding officer of the 112th Precinct, which covers Forest Hills and Rego Park.

The first incident was reported on May 13, the last one on June 3, police officials said.

The suspects broke into the cars — primarily Hondas and Nissans — by breaking the windows. They then ripped the airbags out of steering wheels, Ramos said at a Precinct Community Council meeting Wednesday night.

“These cars are in demand,” Ramos said, referring to the two car brands targeted by the thieves. “So if you have one of those cars try to avoid parking down there.”

Ramos said that an airbag goes for about $450 to $500 on the black market.

“This is a crime that probably goes back 20 years and kind of died down a little bit but unfortunately, it’s back,” he noted.

He also advised car owners to park in well lit areas, where their cars “can be seen at night.”
