THE BRONX — The 5-year-old boy who doctors previously feared might not survive a gunshot wound to the head is recovering, according to the NYPD's chief of detectives.

Jaheen Hunter, who was shot in the head on his birthday Monday on a South Bronx street by parolee Michael Quiles, is on the road to recovery after doctors removed a bullet fragment from his brain, said Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce.

"From what I understand he’s doing better, but he’s still in a tough spot right now," said Boyce at an unrelated press conference Friday.

"I don’t know exactly where they are with the case right now. But I’m hearing, from what we understand...he is recovering somewhat."

Quiles, 27, was aiming at another man when he open fired on Washington Avenue near East 167th Street in Morrisania about 5 p.m.,, striking Hunter in the head.

Prosecutors on Wednesday said doctors could not say whether the boy would live, noting the bullet had entered his brain.

Quiles is currently being held without bail on attempted murder, assault and weapons charges in a Bronx jail, records show.
