WILLIAMSBURG — A man with neck and torso injuries was found dead at the bottom of an outdoor staircase leading to the basement of an apartment building, police said.

A passerby spotted a unconscious man at the base of a a stairwell leading to the basement at 318 Union Ave., next to documentary film center, Union Docs, and called 911 before 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Police and emergency workers rushed to the scene, but the 36-year-old man, whose name was being withheld while his family was informed, was already dead, officials said.

The man had trauma to his neck and torso, but it wasn't immediately clear if foul play was involved or he died when he accidentally fell down the stairs, police officials said.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine how the man died. The ME didn't return a request for comment immediately.
