Teen Arrested for Beating 90-Year-Old Man With Cane, Police Say [VIDEO]

INWOOD — A teen who randomly beat a 90-year-old man with a cane in an incident caught on surveillance video has been arrested and hospitalized to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, the NYPD said.

Saul Nunez, 19, of the Bronx, kicked the victim's shopping cart before striking him in the head with a can outside 4863 Broadway at about 6 p.m. Friday, police said.

The attacker then fled the scene after a bystander intervened and stopped the beating, which left the victim with a cut to his ear and head, the NYPD said.

Nunez was arrested on Saturday after police received a tip and met with his mother at their home, police said. She was able to identify him from the surveillance video.

He was charged with two counts of assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD said. Nunez was awaiting a psychiatric evaluation Monday morning, and sources said he would likely be arraigned on the charges Wednesday.
