Fire Breaks Out in Walls of Artichoke Pizza's E. 14th St. Restaurant: FDNY

EAST VILLAGE -- Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire that started inside the walls of the original Artichoke Basille's Pizza East 14th St. location and spread to apartments above, officials said.

The blaze started after 5 a.m. on Friday inside the ground-floor pizza shop at 328 E. 14th St., according to the FDNY.

It quickly spread to the second and third floors of the six-story building, officials said. The fire was under control about 7 a.m.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, according to the FDNY.

Cousins Francis Garcia and Sal Basille opened their first Artichoke Pizza on East 14th St. in 2008, drawing long lines for the creamy namesake pie overloaded with artichoke hearts, spinach, and cream sauce.

Their pizza empire now includes eight restaurants, a line of frozen pizzas and a reality show on the Cooking Channel.
