Cabbie Dead After Crashing Into Battery Park City Barrier, NYPD Says

BATTERY PARK CITY — A cab driver died when she had a medical episode and crashed on South End Avenue on Thursday morning, NYPD officials said.

Lena Pitu, 76, was heading north on South End Avenue when she suffered a medical episode and swerved into a metal barrier at Liberty Street about 1:18 a.m., police said. Police did not say what the medical issue was.

Pitu, who lived in Woodside and has had a taxi license since 1990, was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital, police said.

There were no other reported injuries, police said.
