Correction Officer Arrested for Sexually Abusing Teen Relative, Police Say

QUEENS — A correction officer was suspended without pay last week after he was arrested on charges that he sexually molested a teenage relative, officials said.

Juan Tirado, 40, was cuffed Friday just after 8 a.m. in Forest Hills after the victim accused him of sexually abusing her multiple times between 2012 and 2015, police said.

Police did not disclose the relationship between Tirado and the girl to protect her privacy, officials said, but sources said that the victim recently came forward.

Tirado faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child, course of sexual conduct against a child and sexual abuse, officials said.

The suspect, who began working for the Department of Correction in April 1999, was suspended without pay, the agency said.

“The Department has zero tolerance for any illegal behavior on the part of staff, and this officer was immediately suspended,” said DOC spokesman Peter Thorne.

Tirado was arraigned Friday and ordered released on his own recognizance, according to court documents. He is due back in court on May 19.

Information about his attorney was not immediately available.
