THE BRONX — Nearly $50,000 in cash spilled onto a Bronx street after a man carrying a bag of money tried in vain to fight off two muggers who snatched tens of thousands of dollars in broad daylight, sparking a struggle, NYPD officials said.

The 27-year-old victim was carrying a bag brimming with $48,000 in cash as he walked past 3046 Buhre Ave., near Hobart Avenue, about 12:45 p.m. March 8 when a man in a white hoodie ran up behind him and tried to swipe the bag, police said.

Video shows the thief trip on the curb and fall to the ground where the victim then pounced on him, sending the bills scattering over the pavement.

The two wrestled on the heap of cash and at one point, the victim managed to fend the bandit off until a second suspect, in a black hoodie, arrived and started punching the victim, video shows.

The first thief then scooped up a wad of bills worth $21,500 and the partners-in-crime fled, police said.

The victim suffered minor injuries to his face and was treated at the scene by emergency responders, officials said.
