YORKVILLE — A grab-and-go pizzeria known for its huge pies was closed down by the city after a health inspector found mice and insufficient heating and storage of its food.
Basile Pizza at 1728 Second Ave., at East 90th Street, was slapped with 55 health violation points and forced to shutter on March 30, Department of Health records show.
An inspector said the eatery had evidence of mice or live mice, and that its workers did not keep hot food at the right temperature or protected from a potential source of contamination.
The pizzeria's food contact surface was also improperly constructed with unacceptable material and the space didn't have a proper ventilation system to prevent grease, heat, steam, odors and smoke from building up, records show.
The eatery was still closed as of Wednesday. A call to the restaurant went unanswered.
"The establishment has been temporarily closed for public health hazards that could not be remediated at the time of the inspection," said Health Department spokeswoman Carolina Rodriguez. "Once these issues have been corrected, the restaurant may request a re-opening inspection."
