ASTORIA — A new five-story apartment building is being planned on Astoria Boulevard, on the site of an antiques and secondhand furniture shop that's popular with film and television set designers.

Newtown 2 LLC applied for a permit on March 23 to construct the mixed-use development at 22-02 Astoria Blvd. at Newtown Avenue, currently home to The Furniture Market, a home decor store that specializes in vintage finds.

The new building would have 16 apartments, a rooftop recreation area, commercial space on the ground floor and a fitness center in the basement, according to paperwork filed with the Department of Buildings.

Real Estate Weekly first reported on the plans.

A staffer at The Furniture Market referred questions to building owner Herman Carolini. In an email, Carolini said it was still "very early" in the development process to discuss details, but that The Furniture Market still has at least three years left on its lease.

The 6,000-square-foot shop has been in the neighborhood for years and sells props for films and television shows, its Facebook page says.

The store has supplied decor for shows such as "Sex and the City" and "Gossip Girl," according to a review in New York magazine.
