YORKVILLE — The Gilroy, a trendy restaurant and cocktail bar that opened in 2014, was shuttered last week for not paying more than $240,000 in taxes, according to its landlord, Carnegie Hill Properties.

The restaurant at the corner of Second Avenue and 81st Street was plastered with orange stickers saying it had been seized by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, first seen by Upper East Siders around March 22.

"The State put the notices up for non-payment," a Carnegie Hill Properties rep said, declining to give her name. "They didn’t pay some taxes and they're in process of eviction."

James Gazzale, a spokesman for the Department of Taxation and Finance, said that the agency seized the business on March 22 for eight open warrants for unpaid taxes in the amount of $241,464.63, including seven warrants for sales taxes and one for corporate tax.

Gazzale would not comment further on the seizure, except to say that in general, the department communicates with businesses well before they're seized.

"When we seize any business, it's always a last resort," he said. "We will continue to have conversations with the business owners in hopes of resolving the debt."

The restaurant was known for its late-night snacks and booze, including its mac and cheese, chicken n' waffles, and its nine versions of Negroni — a mix of equal parts gin, sweet vermouth and Campari bitters.

The restaurant did not return an email for comment and calls went unanswered on Monday.
