QUEENS — Fitness lovers in Forest Hills will soon have a new place to work out.

Retro Fitness, known for its relatively low-cost membership and distinctive yellow equipment, is planning to open its newest Queens gym later this year at 8989 Union Turnpike, within a shopping center located on the border of Forest Hills and Glendale, a company representative said.

The gym, according to people familiar with the plan, will be located in the back of the complex, which also includes a pizzeria, Stop & Shop, Dress Barn and Starbucks.

It was not immediately clear when specifically the facility will be completed, but the representative said the gym should open within a couple of months.

As of Wednesday, the Forest Hills location has not been included among the “coming soon” facilities listed on Retro Fitness’s website.

A gym locator map for the chain shows three other Queens locations that are currently open in Glendale, Astoria and Rego Park.

Forest Hills residents have a variety of gyms to choose from, including Lucille Roberts, New York Sports Club, TITLE Boxing Club, Sedona Fitness and Core Republic Fitness Studio. Those facilities, however, are in different portions of the neighborhood, clustered mostly on Austin Street and Metropolitan Avenue.
