Child Welfare Workers Investigating Death of 1-Year-Old in Staten Island

By Nicholas Rizzi | March 21, 2017 5:12pm

MIDLAND BEACH — Police and child welfare workers said they were investigating the death of a 1-year-old girl who was found dead inside her playpen Monday morning, according to police.

Bianca Abdul was found unconscious inside her family's Moreland Street home, near Midland Avenue, at about 8:05 a.m., the NYPD said.

She was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital North where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Police said there were no obvious signs of trauma on the girl and that they can't determine if there was any criminality involved until the Medical Examiner determines the cause of death.

The girl's mother told police that she fell down several days ago, but appeared fine and didn't take her to the hospital, the NYPD said.

"We are investigating this incident along with the NYPD," Jose Bayona, a spokesman for the Administration of Children's Services, said. "We await the Medical Examiner's review."

Bianca's mother could not be reached for comment.
