BEDFORD-STUYVESANT —The mother of a 2-year-old killed in a Bedford-Stuyvesant fire who took a plea deal to avoid time behind bars for negligence faces up to four years in prison after punching a woman in the face, officials said.
Leila Aquino pleaded guilty in October to criminally negligent homicide to avoid jail time after leaving her 2-year-old daughter, Kaleenah Muldrow, alone in their Monroe Street home before a fire tore through the apartment.
Aquino was told to stay out of trouble, complete a program with the Women’s Prison Association, serve three years probation and let go.
On March 5, Aquino was arrested for punching a woman in the face in Brownsville, police said — in violation of her plea deal — as first reported by the New York Daily News.
Aquino is accused of punching a woman in the face several times and hitting her in the forehead with a knife sharpener, according to reports and court documents.
She faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of the assault, officials said, and her violation of the plea deal allows a judge to sentence her to an additional four years in prison.
“At the court’s directive, she was told not to be arrested on any new matters,” Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Deborah Dowling said, according to the News.
Aquino was released on $2,500 bail on March 6 and is due back in court on Sept. 29, court records show.
Her attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
