QUEENS — A man was seriously injured when an SUV hit him as he tried to cross Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills Thursday night, police said.

The 20-year-old pedestrian was crossing the notoriously dangerous street at 71st Avenue in the crosswalk but against the light about 8:50 p.m. when a westbound Cadillac SUV in the left lane hit him, NYPD officials said.

He suffered serious injuries and was treated at Jamaica Hospital, police said.

The Cadillac's driver, a 68-year-old man, stayed on the scene and wasn't immediately arrested or ticketed, police said.

The busy intersection, which includes multiple traffic lanes going in both directions, the 71st/Continental Avenue subway station, several bus stops and a taxi stand, is one of the most accident prone corners in the neighborhood.

There were 23 traffic-related fatalities along the boulevard since 2009, according to city's Vision Zero map, including two women who were killed in the Forest Hills intersection in recent years

Queens Boulevard was nicknamed the "Boulevard of Death” decades ago after more than 70 pedestrians were killed in accidents there from 1993 to 2001.

The city is in the process of redesigning the entire 7-mile thoroughfare, including adding bike lanes, extra space for pedestrians and traffic calming measures.

There have been no fatalities along Queens Boulevard since the redesign began in 2015, according to the DOT.
