3-Year-Old Found Wandering Bronx Streets Is Reunited with Family, NYPD Says

THE BRONX — A 3-year-old boy found walking alone in Highbridge at dawn Thursday had slipped out of his apartment after his mother left his siblings to babysit as she left for work, police said.

Police said the mother left the sleeping boy with his slumbering teenage siblings, and that the boy's grandmother was en route to babysit. But before the grandma could arrive, the boy walked out of the house and started roaming the streets, police added.

A cab driver later spotted him walking on Sedgwick Avenue near 167th Street and flagged down police officers around 6 a.m., the NYPD said.

When the boy's grandmother arrived to babysit, she realized he was missing and went to a nearby stationhouse, the NYPD said.

The child appeared to be unharmed but was taken to Lincoln Hospital for evaluation, according to police.

The grandmother was reunited with the boy hours later and none of the relatives are expected to be charged, the NYPD said.

It was unknown exactly how long he’d been on the street.

The NYPD notified the Administration for Children’s Services, they said.

ACS didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
