GREENWICH VILLAGE — A former employee stole two hard drives and nearly $400 in petty cash from a Greenwich Village art gallery, police said.

Police said a 27-year-old man who was employed at the gallery through September 2016 entered the Maison Gerard gallery at 53 East 10th St. a little before midnight on Dec. 22.

The gallery was closed for approximately two weeks starting on Dec. 22, police said, and the former employee entered using a key and a keypad.

He made off with 2 one-terabyte hard drives, valued at approximately $200, containing financial information for the gallery, as well as $397 in petty cash, police said.

Another employee noticed the cash and equipment missing on Dec. 27, and it was reported to detectives at the 6th Precinct on Jan. 3, according to police records.

Detectives were able to obtain surveillance video showing the man entering the gallery, and he was identified by three people, according to statements made in court papers.

A detective from the 6th Precinct arrested the former employee on Feb. 2 and he was charged with burglary in the third degree and petit larceny, according to police court records.

He was released after his arraignment without bail and is due back in court on March 20. His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and a manager at the gallery declined to comment.
