YORKVILLE — An 18-story apartment building is being planned to replace a pair of four-story walk-ups on First Avenue, including one that has housed a pharmacy for nearly 90 years, records show.

First Avenue LLC is awaiting city approval for a new building which would include 27 apartments and rise to 199 feet tall at 1639-41 First Ave., near East 85th Street, according to documents filed with the Department of Buildings on Feb. 3.

The 37,458-square-foot building would have roughly 2,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor and a tenant recreation space on the second floor.

Floors three through 12 would have two apartments each, and floors 13 through 18 would have one apartment each, plans show.

It was unclear if the apartments would be a co-ops or condos.

The pharmacy, Capitol Chemists, has occupied the space at 1639 First Ave. since 1930. An employee there declined to comment, saying the owner was not aware of the plans.

No plans for demolition at the site have yet been filed with the DOB.

Capitol Chemists was in hot water in 2012 when its owner, William Purdy, pleaded guilty to illegally selling roughly $300,000 worth of oxycodone out of the pharmacy.

The developer of the new building did not immediately return requests for comment on Tuesday.
