HELL’S KITCHEN — A man tried to rape an intoxicated 24-year-old woman on a street corner early Sunday morning — then told police he was only trying to help her, the NYPD said.
A witness called police after seeing the 33-year-old suspect with the woman near the intersection of West 51st Street and Eighth Avenue around 2 a.m. on Sunday, police said.
The suspect told officers that he was trying to help the woman, but she later told police she was intoxicated and didn’t know him, the NYPD said.
The New York Post reported that the woman was a student at Columbia University, but police couldn’t confirm that.
The man hadn’t yet been arraigned as of midday Tuesday.
