UPDATE: Shane returned home late Tuesday night covered in mud but safe, his owner said.

BAYSIDE — A beloved service dog who is indispensable to his wheelchair-bound owner has been missing since Tuesday morning after he escaped from his yard, his owner said.

Jeff Brosi, 37, relies on his black Labrador Shane to help him with everything from taking out the laundry to pulling him out of his wheelchair when he's tired.

"He's always there to get what I drop and put it right back on my lap," he said.

Shane escaped from Brosi's yard on 207th Street between 23rd and 26th avenues in Bayside at around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday after an aide let him out to use the bathroom.

While he usually just hangs out by the shrubs, he bolted after the aide briefly turned away — running without wearing his collar or service dog vest, Brosi said.

"He kind of just ran," Brosi said.

Since then, his family and friends have been searching for the dog who came into his life through K-9 Companions, which trains service dogs.

Shane isn't micro chipped, and only has an tattoo behind his ear with identifying numbers.

He hopes someone in the neighborhood will recognize Shane and bring him home — and expressed fear that someone would instead want to keep him.

"He's just a big lovable dog, so I think he would go right up to somebody," he said.

If you see Shane, please call Jeff Brosi at (646) 498-4247.
