QUEENS — A Queens mosque is opening its doors and teaching the community more about Islam in the wake of President Donald Trump's controversial decision to ban entry to the U.S. for refugees and immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries and the recent deadly shooting in Quebec.

During the “Coffee, Cake, and True Islam” event organized at Bait Uz Zafar Mosque on 188-15 McLaughlin Ave. in Holliswood this Thursday, locals will get a chance to discuss Islam with its followers, the organizers said.

“62 percent of Americans do not personally know a Muslim,” said Salaam Bhatti, a spokesman for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a reformist movement within Islam, citing a 2014 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center.

There will be a Q&A session over coffee and cake and guests will be able to sign up to become a #MuslimAlly, a hashtag used on social media as part of the True Islam Campaign, an initiative started in December 2015 after the San Bernardino massacre to educate non-Muslims about the religion.

The free event also seeks to further True Islam Campaign's goal to unite Muslim-Americans against extremism and educate non-Muslims about the religion.

“We hope that, through dialogue, we can make our country safer, more compassionate, and more educated on Islam,” said Mirza Ghulam Rabbi, secretary of faith outreach of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Queens chapter.

Bait Uz Zafar Mosque is located at 188-15 McLaughlin Ave. The event will take place on Feb. 2, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Those interested should RSVP at TrueIslamNY@gmail.com.
