LONG ISLAND CITY — Construction will start later this year on a 289-room hotel planned for the corner of Steinway Street and Northern Boulevard, on the site of the now-shuttered Western Beef supermarket, according to the developer.
JMH Development and Mettle Property Group will build the five-story project at 36-20 Steinway St., in what will be a "dual branded" hotel featuring a Homewood Suites on one side and a Hampton Inn on the other, according to a press release.
Both brands are owned by Hilton but cater to different customers: Homewood Suites is more upscale while Hampton Inn is described as a "mid-priced hotel" geared toward a more budget-conscious traveler, the developers said.
The building will have 187 Hampton Inn rooms and 102 Homewood Suites rooms, as well as a private roof deck, lobby bar and a fitness center.
The ground floor will also have 18,000 square feet of retail space, though the tenants have not been confirmed yet, according to a spokeswoman for the developers.
Construction is slated to start at the end of this year, and the hotel is expected to open in 2018.
