THE BRONX — A man lost his leg below the knee after he was pushed in front of a train during a fight in a Claremont subway station Wednesday morning, an NYPD spokesman said.

The 21-year-old man was quarreling with another man, who's about 25 years old, on the northbound platform of the 170th Street station near Grand Concourse when the older straphanger shoved him as a B train pulled in, police said.

"The train operator was pulling in and saw someone fly in front of the train," said Joseph Fox, chief of the transit bureau.

The train then hit the man, partially severing his left leg, police said.

Two officers with the 44th Precinct jumped onto the tracks and applied a tourniquet to the man's leg to stop the bleeding. They carried him onto the platform and took him to Lincoln Medical Center, according to police.

He's listed in stable condition, but his leg below the knee has been amputated, officials said.

The suspect wasn't immediately arrested, police said.

A witness saw him hop a turnstile to go down into the station before the incident and then run back up about five minutes later followed by shouts of "That's him! That's him!" Fox said.

Southbound B trains were running express from Tremont Avenue to 167th Street, the MTA said.

Riders should also expect delays on the D line, officials said.
