MIDTOWN — The giant departures board in Penn Station’s main hall has officially gone dark.
Amtrak shut off power to the block-letter board shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, a few months after announcing plans to replace it with a bevy of smaller LCD screens.
A time-lapse video captured by the transit service shows workers dismantling the board piece by piece.

Removing the board was part of Amtrak’s plan to “draw waiting customers away from the center of the room, easing congestion and improving pedestrian circulation,” a spokeswoman said.
The board will be completely dismantled and removed by early-morning rush hour on Monday, Jan. 30, she added.
