MTA Fare Hike Vote Will Happen Wednesday

FINANCIAL DISTRICT — The board of the MTA will vote on this year's subway and bus fare hike at their monthly meeting Wednesday morning.

The transit authority is considering two different options.

Under one plan, the base fare, currently $2.75, would stay the same, and riders would receive a smaller "bonus" when they put money on their MetroCard.

The bonus is currently 11 percent for $5.50 put on a MetroCard, which brings the "effective" base fare down to $2.48. The bonus would decrease to 5 percent under Plan A, making the "effective" base fare $2.62 per ride.

Under Plan B, the base fare would increase to $3, but the bonus would also increase, up to 16 percent for every $6 spent, making the "effective" per-ride fare $2.59.

Both plans increase the monthly unlimited MetroCard cost to $121 from $116.50, and the weekly unlimited to $32, up from $31.

The MTA held eight public hearings across the metropolitan area on the two plans throughout the month of December.

MTA Chairman and CEO Tom Prendergast, who is expected to step down from his position leading the transit authority at the end of the month, previously said the two plans are "almost indistinguishable in terms of the amount of revenue they generate for the MTA."
