2-Month-Old Suffers Spine Fracture and Eye Damage, NYPD Says

By Aidan Gardiner | January 11, 2017 1:37pm

THE BRONX — Police are trying to figure out how a 2-month-old suffered critical injuries including a spinal fracture, retinal damage and a broken rib before she was found Tuesday, a NYPD spokeswoman said.

The unnamed infant was having trouble breathing when emergency responders came to her fourth-floor apartment on Honeywell Avenue, near East 181st Street, about 10:10 a.m., police said.

She was initially taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, but then transferred to Montefiore Medical Center where she's listed in critical condition, police said.

The girl suffered a spinal fracture, a broken tibia, bruised femur, broken rib and retinal damage, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Both parents were home when emergency responders arrived, police said. They've been interviewed, but there were no immediate arrests.

It wasn't clear Wednesday how the child suffered the life-threatening injuries.

The case is being investigated by the NYPD's Bronx Child Abuse Squad, a spokeswoman said.

"We are deeply concerned by this troubling news and are investigating the circumstances leading to this incident, along with the NYPD," said Carol Caceres, spokeswoman for Administration for Children's Services.
