MIDTOWN — Forecasters are now calling for up to 2 inches of snow Thursday night into Friday across the city, making for a potentially slippery morning commute.

The white stuff is expected to begin falling sometime after 8 p.m., picking up around midnight and lingering until dawn, according to the National Weather Service.

“It’s a pretty consistent amount,” NWS spokesman Tim Morrin said. “The temperature is going to be below freezing, so even though it’s a minor amount, there will be slippery conditions, especially along the roads.”

The Department of Sanitation has issued a “snow alert” and is preparing salt spreaders, plows and tire chains to be used as needed.

The NWS issued a winter weather advisory from 10 p.m. Thursday through 10 a.m. Friday. A travel advisory was also issued by the city's Emergency Management Department, which urged drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to exercise caution when traveling on slick surfaces.

Alternate side parking was also suspended Friday for snow removal.

The system should be out of the area later in the morning, forecasters said.

Temperatures during the day Friday are expected to reach just 35 degrees.
