Manhole Explosion Near MTA Substation Causes Major Subway Delays

By Katie Honan | December 26, 2016 9:56am | Updated on December 26, 2016 12:30pm

MANHATTAN — A manhole explosion next to the Seventh Avenue subway station caused a shutdown of power to the third rail power and forced 1,000 passengers to evacuate from subways Sunday night, according to the FDNY and the MTA.

The fire also "severely damaged" electrical components to several subway lines in Midtown, which will require permanent repairs, the MTA said on its Facebook page

The fire broke out after 10 p.m. on Sunday near the MTA's central substation at 126 West 53rd St., officials said.

More than 1,000 passengers had to be rescued from subway cars along Seventh Avenue after power was cut to the third rail.

Service was restored Monday morning but there were multiple delays and service changes on the A/C/E line, the B/D/F/M and N/Q/R/W lines, according to the MTA website.

The B train was also not running because trains were operating on a holiday schedule.

Good service had resumed on all lines as of 12:30 p.m. Monday.

More information could be seen on the MTA's website.
