CARNEGIE HILL — The NYPD has increased security outside the Russian Consulate General on East 91st Street after the assassination of a Russian envoy to Turkey on Monday.

As of Tuesday afternoon there were two police cars parked outside the consulate near Fifth Avenue, with officers patrolling the block.

Police officials confirmed heightened security on Tuesday after a Turkish off-duty police officer shot the envoy, Andrey G. Karlov, at an exhibition in Ankara. A separate suspected terrorist attack in Germany where a truck drove into a crowded Christmas market killing 12 also has city police on alert.

“The NYPD is monitoring the events in Germany and around the world,” police said in a statement. “The Department has moved highly trained teams, including the Critical Response Command, to high profile locations around New York City. In the coming days, we will look to learn more about what occurred to inform the NYPD’s operations, deployments, and training of officers.”

The Russian Consulate General declined to comment on Tuesday, except to say that additional steps to secure the building were made on Monday "in coordination with American authorities."

On Nov. 8, a security officer at the consulate was found dead with head trauma. Investigators didn't suspect any criminality.
