YORKVILLE — Another private school is expanding on the Upper East Side.

The Spence School is planning to build a new six-story building at 412 E. 90th St., between York and First avenues, to make room for the school's athletics program, according to Taraneh Rohani, a spokeswoman for the school.

The all-girls, K-12 school filed plans on Dec. 8 for the new building, which would be located several blocks from its main building at Madison Avenue and East 91st Street, according to Department of Buildings records.

The school had not yet filed a permit for demolition of the existing building at the site, which includes an Avis car rental and a More Than Parking garage. Both companies declined to comment.

The new building would include a gymnasium on the first two floors, a student cafe and squash courts on the third floor, and a number of classrooms, training rooms and locker rooms will take up the rest of the floors, the plan shows. A greenhouse is also planned for the sixth floor.

The Spence School currently uses a number of other facilities for its athletics, including the Eastern Athletic Club in Brooklyn to host its varsity squash team, and the Armory New Balance Track & Field in Washington Heights.

The 125-year-old school — which calls celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Emmy Rossum and Kerry Washington as alumnae — purchased the new building in 2011 for $26.1 million, and hired Rogers Partner Architects to design the athletic facilities, according to city records.

The school's new property, "will serve to deepen the athletic program for the student body," Rohani said in a statement. "At the current time, plans for a new building on the site are being considered by the school and a preliminary filing to open discussions with the Department of Buildings has been made."

Rohani could not provide further information on the project, including the timeline for its construction.

The Spence School joins a slew of other private schools that are expanding in the neighborhood, including the Chapin School, which is adding three stories to its existing building; the Brearly School, which filed plans for a new 12-story schoolhouse on East End Avenue; and Marymount School, which is preparing to build a new 13-story academic building on East 97th Street.
