UPPER EAST SIDE — A 27-year-old Barneys employee tried to walk out of the department store carrying more than $1,000 in designer merchandise without paying, the NYPD said.
The man was working at the 660 Madison Ave. store when he put two Gucci wallets, worth $840, in his back pants pocket, and put on a Valentino belt, worth $229, around his waist, according to authorities.
A few hours later, he tried to walk out of the store without paying for the items, when store security stopped him about 1:50 p.m., police said.
Prosecutors initially charged the man with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property during his arraignment on Friday, but he pleaded down to disorderly conduct and was sentenced to a conditional discharge with two days of community service. The case was closed, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's office.
Barneys did not immediately return a request for comment.
