QUEENS — A 21-year-old man who shot a man as he lay sleeping beside his girlfriend in his South Ozone Park home turned himself into police Monday, officials said.
Three men broke into Eric Assanah Jr.'s home on 135th Place, near 133rd Avenue, and "crept" into this bedroom at about 12:20 p.m., the NYPD said.
Jonathan Chan then shot Assanah, 21, in the chest, and emergency responders later pronounced him dead at the scene, according to authorities.
"This is another senseless act of gun violence," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. "The victim's girlfriend awoke to see her companion bleeding to death as the four men fled the scene. This was truly a nightmare come true for this young woman."
Police said the shooting was sparked by an ongoing drug dispute, and that Chan, of South Jamaica, had said previously threatened to kill Assanah if he didn't pay him an unspecified amount of money.
On Monday, Chan turned himself in at NYPD's 106th Precinct stationhouse, was arrested and charged with murder, police said. He also faces burglary and resisting arrest charges, police said.
He faces up to 25 years behind bars, according to the Queens DA's office.
Chan has been arrested nine times, but records for seven of those arrests are sealed, an NYPD spokesman said.
He was charged with criminal possession of marijuana in April and criminal mischief in July, police said.
Police arrested Shamar Daley, a 21-year-old from South Ozone Park, on Tuesday morning and charged him with murder and burglary, officials said.
