FINANCIAL DISTRICT — An red-tailed hawk with head injuries stopped traffic on Hanover Square Sunday before being taken to safety, officials said.
NYPD blocked off a portion of Hanover Square and helped rescue the hawk, at about 2 p.m. Sunday, according to witnesses. Watch the full rescue in the videos below:
A spokeswoman for Animal Care Centers of NYC said they took the bird after the rescue, and the hawk was put into the care of Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation (WINORR), a Long Island-based nonprofit that regularly cares for the city's injured wildlife.
Bobby Horvath, who runs WINORR with his wife Cathy, said the bird was placed into the crate by an off-duty city park ranger, before the hawk was transferred to their care — and that the bird will be just fine.
"He had head injuries, maybe from hitting into a building, but no fractures or breaks," Horvath said."We'll have him for about a week, we think, then get him back out there — we'll bring him back to the city, but release him in a park, someplace open, then, he'll fly where ever he wants."
