THE BRONX — A teenager shot by police after allegedly beating his girlfriend and wielding a 12-inch knife was charged with assault Saturday, the NYPD said.

Shamel Jones, 19, was shot by police and arrested in Longwood Wednesday after allegedly refusing to put down the knife, despite warnings from officers at the scene, according to the NYPD.

The officers responded to a call about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday about a man seen beating a woman near Tiffany Street and Westchester Avenue. When they arrived, police said the woman had visible injuries to her face, including her eyes and forehead, and told them Jones had assaulted her.

The officers took the woman on a canvass of the neighborhood, and spotted Jones. When they tried to approach, he fled into a building at 877 Intervale Ave., and ran into an apartment, police said.

The officers gave chase, and were let into the apartment by another man. Once inside, they saw Jones brandishing a "very large" knife, police said.

Officers ordered Jones to drop the knife, but he refused. A lieutenant fired pepper spray into Jones' face, but he continued to approach with the knife, according to the NYPD.

That's when another officer fired one shot, hitting Jones in the lower back. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition, where he underwent surgery, police said.

Jones was charged Saturday with assault, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief, according to the NYPD.

Attorney information for Jones was not immediately available.
