LONGWOOD — A teen accused of assaulting his girlfriend was shot by police Wednesday night, after he refused to drop a 12-inch knife as he approached officers, NYPD officials said.
At around 7:15 p.m., police responded to a call in Longwood after a man was seen beating a woman near Tiffany Street and Westchester Avenue.
When officers arrived, they were approached by the victim, who said her boyfriend, 19-year-old Shamel Jones, had assaulted her. Police said she had visible injuries on her face, including her eyes and forehead.

The woman joined police on a canvass of the neighborhood, when they spotted the man she said attacked her. Police said they tried to approach Jones, but he fled into a building at 877 Intervale Ave., and ran into an apartment.
Police said they chased him, and were let into the apartment by another man.
Once inside, they saw Jones brandishing a "very large" knife, police said. Officers ordered Jones to drop the knife, but he refused. A lieutenant proceeded to spray Mace at Jones, but he continued to approach police, holding the knife, officials said.
At that point, an officer fired one shot, hitting Jones in the lower back. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition and was in surgery Wednesday night, police said.
Police said Thursday that the investigation was ongoing.
