MEATPACKING DISTRICT — The Whitney Museum announced the 63 artists who will be featured in its 2017 Whitney Biennial, slated to open March 17.
The Biennial — the first to be held in the museum's new Meatpacking District location — will span two of the four main gallery floors, as well as various other spaces in the museum, and is meant to showcase the best of today's contemporary American art.
The artists to be featured are a mix of emerging and established names in fine arts as well as video, activism, performance art, and even video game design.
The Whitney's chief curator and deputy director for programs, Scott Rothkopf, said the upcoming biennial will be the museum's "largest ever in terms of gallery space" and "marks the capstone" of the Whitney's efforts, redoubled since they opened their new building, to showcase emerging artists.
Rothkopf praised the curators responsible for the show, Christopher Lew and Mia Locks, for "scouring the country to discover new talents, while creating lively connections to senior figures and our roiling social landscape."
