LONGWOOD — A Bronx teen was shot dead after a trio of masked thieves came into his apartment searching for money his family had recently won in a lawsuit, police said.
Jose Hart, 19, was found unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso in his apartment at 1058 Southern Blvd. on Sunday around 12:30 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the NYPD.
His mother had recently won a $50,000 settlement from a lawsuit about a car accident, which Hart had been boasting about to several people, police said.
The suspects ransacked the apartment and left with a television set and Hart's jacket but no money as the victim's mother had not collected her settlement yet, police said.
The mother was not home during the robbery but returned later to find that her son had been shot, according to the NYPD.
"We woke up and heard the screaming," said a 15-year-old neighbor, who declined to give her name. "The mom was yelling and screaming and crying. She said, 'He's dead! He's dead!'"
Police are unsure whether or not the suspects knew Hart and the investigation into his killing is ongoing.
