Dad Who Slammed Daughter's Chihuahua on UES Street Arrested, Police Say

UPPER EAST SIDE —  A New Jersey man was arrested this week after he attacked his daughter on the corner of East 77th Street and Lexington Avenue in broad daylight — dragging her by her hair and slamming her dog into the ground, police said.

Hassan Mahrach, 59, got into an argument with his 24-year-old daughter outside of her workplace at about 2:15 p.m. on Oct. 19, when the dispute escalated, according to the NYPD.

Mahrach grabbed his daughter's purse and her dog carrier, with her 10-pound Chihuahua inside, and pulled the woman by her hair, dragging her across the sidewalk, police said.

Then he swung the dog carrier behind him and slammed it on the ground "with full force" over his shoulder, according to a criminal complaint.

Lilly, the dog, cried out in pain and Mahrach ran away with the pup and his daughter's purse, but then returned shortly after.

The daughter told police that Lilly was not acting like herself after hitting the ground, so the pup was taken to the ASPCA, where it was determined that her blood was abnormal and there was damage to her liver and muscle tissue from the blunt force of being slammed, they said.

Investigators arrested Mahrach, of Union City, New Jersey, at 11:05 a.m. on Tuesday.

He was arraigned the same day on charges of robbery and torturing animals, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

Mahrach paid $5,000 cash bail and was released. He is due back in court on Jan. 26, 2017. His attorney did not immediately return a call for comment on Friday.
