LOWER MANHATTAN — Police are asking for help finding a debit card scammer they say has stolen more than $3,000 from four victims.
Police said the man used a "skimmer" — a card reader that lets thieves steal data from the ATM terminal — at four separate locations in SoHo in October.
The man, who police describe as about 25 to 35 years old and about 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10, used the stolen bank account information of four victims to clone ATM cards.
He then proceeded to use those clone cards to steal cash from four different ATM locations, police said. On Oct. 2, at about 7 p.m., he used a bogus card to steal $500 from a Citibank ATM at 1 Park Ave.
On Oct. 3, just after midnight, he used a 21-year-old's bank information to steal $989 from a CVS ATM at 300 Park Ave. South. And the next day, just after midnight on Oct. 4, he stole $908 from a CVS ATM located at 253 First Ave., from the account of a 37-year-old man.
Finally, on Oct. 24, the man stole the bank account information of a 38-year-old woman, using it to withdraw $520 from a CVS ATM at 194 Seventh Ave., police said.
