MIDTOWN — A thief stole more than $5,100 worth of designer items — including a gold clutch and a Comme des Garçons wallet — after a woman checked them into the Plaza Hotel’s coat room, the NYPD said.
The 49-year-old victim checked a $2,950 Lee Savage gold clutch and a $1,500 bag with gold hardware at the coat check of the Fifth Avenue hotel before attending a company gala there, police said.
When the woman returned to the coat check around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 3, she discovered the two bags — which contained a $75 Comme des Garçons wallet, $400 worth of gold jewelry and $177 worth of Chanel and NARS makeup — had been stolen, the NYPD said.
She also discovered someone had charged $75 to her debit card at a Shell Gas Station in Brooklyn, as well as inside a taxi, police said.
She’d borrowed the Lee Savage clutch from someone else, the NYPD noted.
The thief made off with a total of $5,177, including the debit card charges, police said.
The Plaza Hotel did not immediately respond to request for comment Thursday.
